Pantone Colour of the Year 2018...
It’s official – Ultra Violet has been elected as Pantone’s colour of the year for 2018.
Ultra Violet means beyond violet and shows in the colour spectrum as deep and bold.
Violet colours are associated with meaningful inspiration and spiritual fulfilment. They represent the dream, the imagination and the future. In creative terms they’re inspired by science, space and what lies ahead for us in the future.
As Pantone’s Executive Director summarises, “inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come”.
If Ultra Violet forecasts a global trend this year of originality, timelessness, ingenuity, mindfulness and visionary thinking, then count us in!
Described as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful” the majestic purple hues have been a favourite of many famous faces over the years from Queen Elizabeth II and Hilary Clinton to creative geniuses like David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and Prince, and Rihanna has accented her eyelids with pops of purple on multiple occasions.

The easiest way to start to incorporate the hue to your makeup now and to keep it simple and wearable, is to tone it down with a neutral shade. Apply the colour to your lips or eyes, but not both. A dab of violet eyeshadow from our Eyeshadow Quinset Cool will upgrade a smoky eye. Or, a slick of Lipstick Flaming Fuchsia – a gorgeous purple/pink – will instantly make your look a whole lot more interesting.
Or for a more daring look like our model here, use the violet shades on both eyes and lips, which does look amazing. Keep the eye colours subtle and smoky, and use a saturated glossy bright shade on the lips to really pop against the skin.
Prep the skin with Primer Velvet Veil and Highlighter Candle Glow Pearly Pink mixed together to give the skin a subtle glow. (When using purple eye shades, take care to conceal under the eyes with Concealer Yellow followed by a skin tone concealer to counteract any dark circles.) For this look, Paramedical Camouflage Foundation will give a flawless finish and just a hint of Blusher Mango Glow to highlight the cheek bones.
To create a fuller brow like our illustration, use the larger stencil in our Brow Kit Black/Brown to enhance the dramatic makeup style.
Our Eyeshadow Foursome Cool shades look great blended across the eyelids, and our Full Graduated Eyelashes give balance to the bolder brows. Complete the eyes with Gel Eyeliner Tidal Wave on the upper lids, followed by a narrower line of Black Out on the upper and lower lashes. Finish with heaps of Mascara Black to really make the lashes stand out.
Finish off the lips with Runway Lipgloss Catwalk which is our fave, gorgeous and glossy!
Ultra Violet hues are easier to mix and wear than you may think and look great with gold and green. Make this year a very creative, fun and successful one – be daring, be bold!
