Colour of the year
By Wendy Hill
The US-based colour authority Pantone sets the pace annually when they announce their Pantone Colour of the Year. It’s eagerly awaited by the design industry and is soon incorporated into all aspects of design, fashion, makeup, hair and nails.
For the first time the blending of two shades — Rose Quartz and Serenity — is chosen as the Pantone Colour of the Year for a softer take on colour for 2016.
Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.
As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colours that psychologically fulfil our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.
It’s a symbolic colour selection - a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude, and an increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression.
This makeup-look straight off the catwalk in New York, expresses the soft warm tones of Rose Quartz and is instantly wearable. It looks great worn with garment shades of Serenity rather than a blend of pink and blue makeup, and it warms the skin for winter.
FACE: First prime the skin with Velvet Veil Primer, adding No Baggage Eyelift under the eye area and all over the eyelids to prep and tighten skin, and highlight the eyes.
Choose a foundation a shade lighter than the natural skin tone for a softer effect. Nude Crème all-in-one Camouflage Foundation applied lightly with the Foundation Brush gives a smooth matte finish for winter.
CHEEKS: Blend the two shades of Blusher/Bronzer Duo Two Fabulous together with the Kabuki Brush and stipple lightly across the cheekbones and sides of the temples to add colour and warmth to the skin.
EYES: Outline the brows with Blondi Brow Liner, using soft, feathering strokes. Apply Smudge Eye Pencil in Champagne all over the eye area as a base. The next steps are to layer each eyeshadow to create a warm dimensional depth of the rose tone over the lids and up to the socket line, and a little under the lower lashes. Start with Pink Glow, Honey Glow and Brown Silver layering and blending very softly with the Mini Socket Dome Brush each time. For soft eyeliner, apply a light line of Smudge Eye Pencil Baroque blending out with the Angle Eye Brush. Finish with warm Mascara Brown/Black.
LIPS: For winter protection prep lips with Yu-Be Lip Therapy Balm and using the Lip Brush blend Spicy Rum Lipstick into the balm for a sheer translucent lip shade.
The finished look is well balanced, soft and natural, and serene.
